Towing a UAZ Patriot with automatic transmission

Warning: Before towing, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual as the procedures below may vary by model and year.

Preparation:

1. Make sure that the towing vehicle and the vehicle that will be towed are in good working order and properly equipped.
2. Connect the vehicles using a tow rope or rigid hitch.
3. Turn off the stability control (ESP) in the towed vehicle, if possible.
4. Move the gearshift lever of the towed vehicle to the ‘P’ position.

Towing check:

1. Start the tow vehicle engine.
2. While holding the brake pedal, slowly release the clutch pedal in the tow vehicle.
3. If the towed vehicle does not move, check the towing connection and make sure that the ESP system is turned off.
4. If the towed vehicle is moving, press the gas pedal in the tow vehicle and begin to move.

Towing:

1. Maintain a constant speed and avoid sudden acceleration and braking.
2. If you need to stop, do it smoothly, using the brake pedal and engine braking of the tow vehicle.
3. Shift down to lower gears on steep inclines and hills to reduce stress on the transmission and brakes.

Stopping towing:

1. Signal in advance to the driver of the towing vehicle that you intend to stop.
2. Reduce speed and gently press the brake pedal.
3. When the vehicle comes to a complete stop, ensure that the tow rope or rigid hitch is disconnected.

Warnings:

*Do not exceed the stated maximum towing speed for your vehicle.
* Do not tow a car with an automatic transmission for a long time.
* Check the towing coupling regularly and tighten it if necessary.
* Be careful in rain, snow or ice conditions.
* Do not leave a towed vehicle unattended with the engine running.
