Required tools and materials:
* Ratchet
* Extension cord
* Spanner No. 19
* Large torque wrench (from 500 Nm)
* New crankshaft pulley nut
Tightening process:
1. Prepare the car:
* Park the car on a level surface.
* Apply the parking brake.
* Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the timing belt cover:
*Locate the timing belt cover, usually located at the front of the engine.
*Remove the cover by unscrewing the bolts or clips that hold it in place.
3. Find the crankshaft pulley:
* The crankshaft pulley is located in the center of the front of the engine.
* It usually has a large diameter and a ribbed surface.
4. Install the ratchet and wrench No. 19:
* Place a #19 spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut.
* Connect the ratchet to the extension and insert the extension into the spanner.
5. Turn the crankshaft:
* Turn the ratchet clockwise to rotate the crankshaft.
* Align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the engine housing.
* This will ensure correct valve timing.
6. Tighten the crankshaft pulley nut:
* Using a large torque wrench, tighten the crankshaft pulley nut to the value specified in the service manual (usually 450 to 550 Nm).
* It is recommended to use a new bolt as it can be tightened to the proper torque.
7. Install the timing belt cover:
* Reinstall the timing belt cover and tighten the bolts or clamps.
8. Check tightness:
* Turn the crankshaft a few turns and check the tightness of the crankshaft pulley nut again.
9. Start the engine:
* Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
* Make sure the engine runs smoothly and there are no unusual noises or vibrations.
Cautions:
* It is important to properly tighten the crankshaft pulley nut as under-tightening may cause engine damage.
*If you do not have a proper torque wrench, it is recommended that you have a qualified mechanic do this work.
*Tightening the crankshaft pulley nut can be very difficult, so make sure you use reliable tools and take proper safety precautions.
