Switching automatic transmission step by step instructions:

1. Check that the vehicle is in Park (P) position. You should hear or feel a clicking sound when you move the shift lever into the P position.

2. Press the brake pedal. This is necessary so that the gearshift system knows that you want to change gear.

3. Move the gear shift lever to the desired position. Typically the positions are indicated by the following letters:

– P (stop)
– R (reverse)
– N (neutral position)
– D (movement)
– 2, 3 or L (lower gears used for climbing or towing)

4. Release the brake pedal. The gearbox will engage in the selected position.

5. If you downshift (2, 3 or L), be prepared for the vehicle to slow down and the engine speed to increase.

Additional tips:

* Never change gear without pressing the brake pedal.
* If the vehicle is moving, do not shift to P. This may damage the transmission.
* If you are not sure which position the gear shift lever is in, return it to position P and start the shift process again.
* Shifting from one gear to another is usually smooth, but in some cases a slight jolt or vibration may be felt. This is fine.
