The correct sequence for starting an engine with an automatic transmission is:
1. Make sure it’s safe. Sit behind the wheel, adjust the mirrors and headrest. Fasten your seat belt.
2. Put the car on the parking brake. This will prevent the vehicle from moving while it is in the park position.
3. Shift the gear shift lever to Park (P). This ensures that the car does not move when you start the engine.
4. Press the brake pedal. This activates the shift lever locking system, allowing you to place it in Drive.
5. Insert the ignition key. Check that the key is in the “Off” position.
6. Turn the key to the “On” position. The instrument panel and warning lights will light up.
7. Check the dashboard. It should show gear “P” or “N”. If you see any other gear, do not start the engine.
8. Press the brake pedal. Keep the pedal depressed.
9. Turn the key to the Start position. Hold it in this position until the engine starts.
10. Leave the engine running. Release the key and keep the brake pedal depressed.
11. Wait a few seconds. This will allow the engine to warm up and gain speed.
12. Release the brake pedal. Feel how the car slowly moves away.
Additional tips:
* Do not press the gas pedal when starting the engine.
* If the engine does not start after several attempts, check the battery, starter and spark plugs.
* Do not leave the engine running unattended.
