Step 1: Make sure it’s safe

* Make sure the vehicle is in park or neutral.
* Apply the parking brake.

Step 2: Insert the key

* Insert the key into the ignition.

Step 3: Press the brake pedal

*Press the brake pedal with your right foot. Make sure you press it hard enough to activate the brake switch.

Step 4: Turn the key to the “Start” position

* Turn the key to the “Start” position and hold it until the engine starts.

Step 5: Release the Key

*Once the engine starts, release the key.

Step 6: Shift into the desired gear

* Select the appropriate gear (D for Drive, R for Reverse, N for Neutral or P for Park).

Step 7: Release the parking brake

* Release the parking brake to start driving.

Additional tips:

*Some automatic transmission vehicles have a Start/Stop button instead of a traditional key. For these vehicles, follow the same steps, but instead of turning the key, press the button.
* If the engine does not start the first time, release the key and try again. Do not hold the key in the “Start” position for more than 10 seconds.
* If the engine does not start after several attempts, check the battery, ignition system, or fuel system.
