Procedure:
1. Prepare the car:
* Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
* Release the brake pedal and move the gearshift lever to Park (P) or Neutral (N).
2. Find the gearbox cable adjustment unit:
* It is usually located in the engine compartment or under the vehicle.
* Locate the metal cable connecting the shift lever to the transmission.
* Locate the assembly where the cable is attached to the transmission.
3. Loosen the locknut:
*Using a wrench or adjustable wrench, loosen the locknut that holds the adjustment assembly in place.
* Be careful not to damage the locknut.
4. Adjust the cable:
* Using a hex wrench, turn the adjustment unit clockwise (to tighten the cable) or counterclockwise (to loosen the cable).
*Make small (1/4 turn) adjustments at a time.
5. Check the cable tension:
* After each adjustment, check the cable tension by shifting the gear lever several times.
* Try to feel a slight resistance when shifting gears, but there should be no sticking or slipping.
6. For more precise adjustment, use a caliper:
* Measure the distance from the transmission housing to the center of the hole on the gear shift lever.
*Compare this measurement with the value given in your vehicle’s service manual.
*Adjust the cable until the measured value matches the value in the manual.
7. Tighten the locknut:
* Once the correct cable tension is achieved, tighten the lock nut.
* Make sure it is securely tightened to prevent adjustment changes.
8. Check transmission operation:
* Release the vehicle’s parking brake and drive for a short time.
* Shift gears and check that they shift smoothly and correctly.
