How to reset adaptive automatic transmission settings to factory settings

For most modern cars:

1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
2. Find level ground and apply the parking brake.
3. Turn off the engine and turn on the ignition (position II).
4. Press and hold the brake pedal.
5. Shift the gear to «P» (Park).
6. Press the RESTART button or the automatic transmission reset button (if equipped), usually located on the center console or under the steering wheel.
7. Hold the button for 10-15 seconds (or as directed in the instruction manual).
8. Release the button and move the gear selector to the “N” (neutral) position.
9. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.

For cars with an outdated automatic transmission:

1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
2. Find level ground and apply the parking brake.
3. Turn off the engine and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
4. Wait 15 minutes to discharge the capacitors in the automatic transmission.
5. Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
6. Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes until the automatic transmission returns to factory settings.

Note:

*Different makes and models of transmissions may have different reset procedures. Always consult the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle model.
* Resetting the automatic transmission’s adaptive settings may result in a change in the feel when shifting gears, as the transmission will re-learn optimal shift points.
* Regular automatic transmission reset is not recommended. A reset should only be performed if shifting problems or other transmission problems occur.
