To completely drain the oil from an automatic transmission (automatic transmission), you must perform the following steps:
1. Preparation:
* Provide access to the bottom of the car (lift, inspection hole or overpass).
* Gather the necessary tools and materials:
* Wrench or hexagon for drain plug
* Oil collection container
* Gloves and work clothes
2. Starting the engine:
* Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to warm up the oil.
3. Draining the oil:
* Locate the automatic transmission drain plug, usually located at the bottom of the transmission housing.
* Place a container under the drain hole to collect the oil.
* Carefully unscrew the drain plug with a wrench or hexagon.
* Be prepared for the oil to flow immediately and under pressure.
4. Inspection and cleaning:
* While the oil is draining, inspect the drain plug and the magnet on it for metal shavings or signs of contamination.
* If necessary, clean the drain plug and magnet from metal shavings.
5. Replacing the drain plug:
* After draining the oil, carefully tighten the drain plug.
* Make sure the new gasket is in good condition or use a new one if available.
6. Draining cooling oil:
* Disconnect the oil cooling hoses, usually located near the drain plug.
* Remove the old coolant oil to a separate container.
* Flush the hoses and oil cooler with clean oil or cleaning solution.
7. Cooling oil installation:
* Reconnect the oil cooling hoses to the automatic transmission.
* Pour new cooling oil into the system.
* Start the engine and let it idle to circulate fresh oil through the cooling system.
8. Refilling automatic transmission oil:
* Locate the automatic transmission filler plug, usually located on the side of the transmission.
* Using a funnel, pour new oil into the automatic transmission.
* The oil level must correspond to the level indicated on the automatic transmission oil dipstick.
9. Level check and completion:
* Measure the oil level on the dipstick.
*Add oil as necessary to achieve the correct level.
* Reinstall the dipstick and start the engine.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions and return to the parking position.
* Check the oil level again and add if necessary.
Note: Refer to your specific vehicle’s owner’s manual for detailed information and recommendations on automatic transmission oil change intervals and the type of oil used.
