Self-diagnosis of Toyota automatic transmission
Materials:
* Paperclip or thin wire
Procedure:
1. Preparation:
* Park the car on a level surface.
* Shift the gear selector to “P” (park).
* Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the automatic transmission to cool down.
2. Connection to the connector:
* Open the hood and find the self-diagnosis connector. It is usually located near the left headlight or battery.
*The connector will have 17 pins, with pins #4, 11 and 17 missing.
* Carefully insert a paperclip or wire into pins 4 and 13 of the connector.
3. Run diagnostics:
* Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
*Wait about 5 seconds for the check engine light to flash on the instrument panel.
4. Reading fault codes:
*After the check engine light starts flashing, count the number of flashes.
* Each flash corresponds to a fault code number.
* Write down all trouble codes in the order they appear.
* Fault codes may appear up to “99”. If the code is not displayed, then no faults were detected.
5. Reset diagnostics:
*Once all fault codes have been recorded, turn off the ignition.
*Wait a few seconds and turn the ignition back on. This will reset the diagnostic mode.
* Remove the paperclip or wire from the connector.
6. Interpretation of codes:
* Trouble codes can be found in your vehicle’s repair manual or online at Toyota diagnostic websites.
Note:
*If you have no experience working with vehicle electrical systems, it is recommended that you seek professional help.
* Automatic transmission self-diagnosis is not comprehensive and does not replace a full diagnosis performed by a qualified mechanic.
