* Constantly changing engine speed: Engine speed changes smoothly to reflect driving speed.
* Gear selector: Typically has fewer positions (P, R, N, D) with a smooth transition between them.
* Shift Lever: Often uses electronic control, with no direct connection to the gearbox.
* No neutral position: Most CVTs do not have an “N” mode.

Additional ways to distinguish automatic transmission from CVT:

* Sound: Automatic transmissions typically make more noticeable sounds when shifting gears, while CVTs are quieter.
* Fuel Economy: CVTs generally provide better fuel economy than automatic transmissions.
* Price: CVTs are usually more expensive than automatic transmissions.
* Reliability: CVTs can be more susceptible to failure, especially when used in severe conditions.
