Tools and materials:
* Set of keys and socket heads
* Screwdriver
* Jack and stands
* Container for draining transmission fluid
* New O-ring for transfer case
Steps:
1. Preparing the car:
* Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
* Place chocks under the wheels.
* Allow the engine to cool.
2. Draining transmission fluid:
* Locate the drain plug on the transmission and place a container under it.
* Unscrew the drain plug and drain the liquid.
3. Disconnecting drives:
* Remove the front wheels.
* Disconnect the drive shafts from the wheel hubs.
* Remove the bolts securing the drives to the gearbox.
* Pull the drives out of the gearbox.
4. Disconnecting electrical connectors:
* Disconnect all electrical connectors going to the transmission, including the wiring harness connector, pressure sensors, etc.
5. Removing the starter:
* Remove the bolts securing the starter to the engine.
* Disconnect the power and starter control wires.
* Remove the starter.
6. Disconnecting the wiring harness:
* Disconnect the wiring harness from the engine and throttle actuator.
* Remove the wiring harness from the engine.
7. Disconnecting the torque converter:
* Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the crankshaft.
* Use a screwdriver to pry and disconnect the torque converter from the shaft.
* Carefully remove the torque converter from the transmission.
8. Raising the gearbox:
* Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
* Jack the gearbox.
* Carefully lift the transmission until it disengages from the engine.
9. Removing the gearbox:
* Remove the lower transmission mounting bolts.
* Carefully remove the transmission from under the vehicle.
10. Replacing the transfer case sealing ring:
* Remove the old O-ring from the transfer case.
* Install the new O-ring in place.
11. Gearbox installation:
* Lift the transmission into position under the vehicle.
* Carefully align the transmission with the engine and start it.
* Install the lower transmission mounting bolts.
* Lower the gearbox into place and tighten the upper mounting bolts.
12. Installation of components:
* Install the torque converter.
* Install the starter.
* Connect the wiring harness.
* Install drives.
* Install the front wheels.
13. Filling transmission fluid:
* Pour fresh transmission fluid into the gearbox.
* Tighten the drain plug.
14. Starting the engine:
* Start the engine and let it idle.
* Shift gears to check transmission operation.
