Method 1: Shift Lever
* Automatic transmission (AT): The Park position (P) is in the upper right corner and the Drive position (D) is to the left of it. The gear shift lever is often a straight design with no additional shift modes.
*Dual Clutch Gearbox (DSG): The Park position (P) is also in the top right corner, but the Drive position (D) is to the left and slightly lower. The gear lever often has an additional manual shift mode (+/-).
Method 2: Drive Mode Selector
* Automatic: Some automatic transmission vehicles have a drive mode selector that allows you to switch between standard, sport and winter modes.
* DSG: DSG gearboxes usually do not have a drive mode selector.
Method 3: Engine Bay
* Automatic Transmission: Automatic transmissions use a torque converter, which is usually a large bell-shaped housing attached to the transmission.
*DSG: DSG gearboxes usually have a dual clutch, which is two small separate discs attached to the gearbox.
Method 4: Dashboard
* Automatic transmission: There may be an indicator on the dashboard indicating that the automatic transmission mode is engaged (for example, P, R, N, D).
* DSG: DSG gearboxes often have an indicator indicating the current gear shift mode (eg D, S, M).
Additionally:
*If the car has paddle shifters, this usually indicates that it has a DSG gearbox.
* DSG generally provides sportier and faster gear changes than automatic transmissions.
