Automatic transmission (automatic transmission)
* Gear selector (selector): Has clear gear positions (P, R, N, D, possibly L or S).
* Park Position (P): Locks the transmission allowing the ignition key to be removed.
* Parking mode (N): The transmission is not engaged.
* Reverse (R): Moves the vehicle backwards.
* Drive (D): Normal driving mode in which the gear is selected automatically.
*Low gear (L or S): For more power or engine braking at low speeds.
CVT (CVT)
* Gear selector (selector): Typically has positions P, R, N, D, as well as a sport mode (S) or manual gear shift mode.
* Park Position (P): See Automatic Transmission.
* Parking mode (N): See automatic transmission.
* Reverse (R): See Automatic.
* Drive (D): Normal driving mode, but without noticeable gear changes.
*Sport Mode (S): Modifies engine and transmission characteristics for a sportier driving experience.
*Manual gear shifting: Typically done using the steering wheel paddle shifters or gear selector.
Other differences
* Gear shifting: The automatic transmission has a noticeable shifting feel, while the CVT delivers smooth, unnoticeable shifts.
*Sound: Automatic transmissions can make distinctive noises when shifting gears, while CVTs tend to be quieter.
* Fuel Economy: CVTs are typically more fuel efficient than automatic transmissions due to their continuously variable transmissions.
