Complete automatic transmission oil change
Required materials:
* New automatic transmission oil recommended by the car manufacturer
* New automatic transmission oil filter (if applicable)
* Warm garage/room
* Tool kit for automatic transmission maintenance
* Funnel
* Container for draining old oil
Steps:
1. Preparation:
* Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
* Warm up the engine and transmission by driving for about 15-20 km.
* Stop the engine and lift the car on a lift or place it on stands.
2. Draining oil from the automatic transmission pan:
* Locate the drain plug on the automatic transmission pan. It is usually located at the bottom of the tray.
* Place a container to drain the oil under the drain plug.
* Using a wrench or hexagon, carefully unscrew the drain plug. The oil will begin to drain into the container.
*Wait until all the oil has drained from the pan. This may take a few minutes.
3. Removing the automatic transmission pan:
*After the oil has drained, clean the drain plug and install a new gasket.
* Unscrew the bolts securing the pan to the automatic transmission.
* Carefully remove the tray. This may cause a small amount of remaining oil to spill out.
* Dispose of old oil according to local regulations.
4. Replacing the oil filter:
* If the automatic transmission has an oil filter, unscrew the bolts securing it and remove the old filter.
* Install the new oil filter by tightening the mounting bolts.
5. Cleaning the tray and installation:
* Clean the automatic transmission pan from any remaining old oil and metal shavings.
* Apply a small amount of new oil to the pan gasket.
* Reinstall the pan and tighten the mounting bolts.
6. Filling with new oil:
* Using a funnel, fill the automatic transmission with new oil. The amount of oil to be filled is indicated in the vehicle’s operating manual.
* Remove the automatic transmission dipstick, wipe it dry and reinsert it.
* Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. It should be at the “hot” mark on the dipstick.
7. Leak check:
* Start the engine and shift the gear lever to different positions to check for oil leaks.
* Rock the vehicle back and forth to distribute the oil throughout the system.
8. Check the oil level again:
* After driving the car for about 10 km, check the oil level in the automatic transmission again. It may go down a little. Add the required amount of oil.
Note:
* Always use automatic transmission oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
* The automatic transmission oil must be changed in accordance with the interval specified in the vehicle’s operating manual.
*If you are unsure of your skills, have your automatic transmission oil changed by a qualified mechanic.
