Visual inspection:
* Check for leaks: Check the transmission housing, pan and hoses for leaks. Even small leaks can indicate problems.
* Inspect the pan gasket: Check the pan gasket for damage, cracks or leaks.
* Inspect the shift cables: If your vehicle has a manual shift, inspect the cables for wear or damage.
* Check fluid level: Check the transmission fluid level using the dipstick or fill hole. The level must correspond to that specified in the vehicle’s operating manual.
* Inspect the color of the fluid: Clear, red or pink fluid indicates normal transmission condition. Black or brown fluid with a burnt smell may indicate transmission problems.
Test drive:
* Acceleration: Get into the car and press the gas pedal hard. The transmission should shift smoothly and quickly to higher gears. Note that there is no slipping or jerking.
* Braking: Brake until you come to a complete stop. The transmission should shift smoothly to a lower gear. Note that there is no excessive noise or vibration.
* Driving on uneven roads: Drive on uneven roads or over potholes. The gearbox must respond smoothly to changes in the road surface. Pay attention to the absence of extraneous noise or knocking.
* Reverse: Shift into reverse gear. The gearbox should shift smoothly into reverse mode. Please note that there is no noise or difficulty when turning on.
Listen and pay attention:
*Unusual Noises: Pay attention to any unusual noises such as whirring, whining or rattling noises coming from the transmission.
*Slipping or Jerking: Watch for slipping or jerking when shifting gears.
* Burning smell: A burning smell may indicate problems with the transmission or transmission fluid.
Computer diagnostics:
* Scanning Error Codes: Connect the scanner to the car and scan for error codes. Codes may indicate specific transmission problems.
* Sensor Check: Check transmission sensors such as shift range position sensor and input shaft speed sensor for malfunctions.
Note: Please remember that transmission condition may vary depending on the make, model and age of your vehicle. Be sure to check the owner’s manual specific to your vehicle and consult a qualified mechanic if necessary.
