Checking the automatic transmission

1. Visual inspection

* Check the transmission pan for transmission fluid leaks or drips.
* Check the color of the transmission fluid. It should be red or pink and not have a burning smell.

2. Test drive

* Start the engine and warm it up.
* Switch the box to different modes (D, R, N, etc.) and check for smooth shifting.
* Accelerate and decelerate to check transmission performance under load.
* Listen for outside noises such as squealing, buzzing, or banging.

3. Electronic diagnostics

* Connect the trouble code scanner to the vehicle’s OBD-II connector.
*Check for transmission related fault codes.
* Check engine speed and transmission speed data for smooth and correct gear changes.

Checking the variator

1. Visual inspection

* Check for transmission fluid leaks or drips.
* Check the level and color of the transmission fluid (some CVTs use a special fluid).

2. Test drive

* Check for smooth shifting throughout the entire rev range.
* CVTs do not have stepped gears, so acceleration must be gradual.
* Listen for unusual noises such as howling, vibration or humming.

3. Electronic diagnostics

* Connect the trouble code scanner to the vehicle’s OBD-II connector.
*Check for trouble codes related to the CVT.
*Check gear ratio and engine speed data for smooth and correct operation.

4. Additional check

* Check the condition of the drive belts and gears, if possible.
* Check the condition of the electronic variator control unit.

General Tips

*Always perform checks with the engine warm.
* If any abnormalities are found, contact a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
* Regular maintenance and replacement of transmission fluid will significantly extend the life of the transmission or CVT.
