To change the automatic transmission with the engine off, follow these steps:
For most cars:
1. Press the brake pedal.
2. Make sure the transmission is in Park (P).
3. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the “Accessories” (ACC) position. Some vehicle models may require you to turn the key to the “ON” position.
4. Move the gear shift lever to the desired position.
5. Release the brake pedal.
For BMW models and some other German cars:
1. Press the brake pedal.
2. Make sure the transmission is in Park (P).
3. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position.
4. Press and hold the unlock button on the shift lever.
5. Move the gear shift lever to the desired position.
6. Release the unlock button.
Note:
* Shifting the automatic transmission with the engine off is not recommended, as this may damage the transmission.
*This procedure is only for use when the transmission must be shifted to move the vehicle, such as towing or loading onto a tow truck.
