Kicks or jolts when shifting gears in a Kia Sportage 3 automatic transmission may occur for the following reasons:

1. Insufficient level or low quality of transmission fluid (ATF):
* Make sure the ATF fluid level is within the normal range.
*Change ATF regularly according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

2. Dirty or faulty ATF filter:
* Replace the ATF filter.
* Thoroughly rinse or replace the filter housing.

3. Wear of friction discs:
*Friction discs wear out over time, causing slippage and kicking.
* Replace the friction discs (this is a complex repair that requires removing the transmission).

4. Faulty torque converter:
* The torque converter can wear out or fail, causing vibration and kicking.
* Have the torque converter replaced or repaired by a qualified mechanic.

5. Faulty shift solenoid:
* Solenoids control the flow of ATF in the transmission.
* Replace faulty solenoids.

6. Faulty electronic transmission control module (TCM):
* The TCM controls the operation of the transmission.
* Diagnose and replace faulty TCM.

7. Mechanical fault of the gearbox:
* Worn gears, bearings or synchronizers can lead to kicking and other problems.
* The transmission needs major repairs or replacement.

Note: Shift kick may also occur when accelerating hard, towing heavy loads, or driving at high speeds for long periods of time. If you experience kicking or jolting during normal driving, it is recommended that you take it to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible for diagnosis and repair.
