Gear shifting in a Toyota RAV4 with an automatic transmission occurs as follows:

Switching modes:

* P (Park): Parking. Blocks the transmission.
* R (Reverse): Reverse.
* N (Neutral): Neutral. The gearbox is not engaged.
* D (Drive): Driving. The car is moving with a normal gear ratio.
* S (Sport): Sports mode. Increases engine speed for faster acceleration.
* M (Manual): Manual mode. The driver can change gears manually.

Gear shift:

* From position P to D: Press the brake pedal and move the selector lever to position D.
* From D to R: Stop the vehicle completely, press the brake pedal and move the selector lever to R.
* From D to N: Move the selector lever to N while driving or at a traffic light.
* From position N to D: Press the brake pedal and move the selector lever to position D.

Shifting gears in manual mode (M):

*Upshift: Move the selector lever forward (+).
*Downshift: Move the selector lever back (-).

Note:

* Do not change gears while driving, when the vehicle is coasting or at high speed.
* To shift the selector lever from position P, you must first press the brake pedal.
* If it is necessary to switch between modes D and R, stop the vehicle completely.
