Visual inspection
* Gear shift lever:
* The automatic transmission has a classic gear shift lever with characteristic designations (P, R, N, D, 2, 1).
* A CVT typically has a knob or switch marked ‘D’ and ‘-‘ or ‘+’ to simulate gear changes.
* Gear selector:
* The automatic transmission has a regular selector that moves between gear positions.
* With a CVT, the selector is usually electronically controlled and does not have clear gear positions.
Physical sensation
* Gear change:
* With an automatic transmission, changing gears feels like a push or a blow.
* With a variator, gear changes occur smoothly and imperceptibly.
* Drive:
* With an automatic transmission, the drive is carried out through the gearbox and is transmitted to the wheels through the driveshaft.
* With a variator, the drive is carried out directly using a V-belt or chain connecting the engine to the drive wheels.
Information board
*Gear indicator:
* Most cars with automatic transmission have an indicator showing the selected gear.
*Cars with a CVT usually do not have such an indicator.
* Driving modes:
* Automatic transmissions often have driving modes such as sport or economy.
* The variator usually does not have such modes.
