Materials and tools:
* New automatic transmission filter (original recommended)
* Automatic transmission pan gasket
* Automatic transmission fluid (type and volume are indicated in the operating manual)
* Set of wrenches or ratchets
* Drain pan
* Funnel and hose
Replacement procedure:
1. Safety: Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake and turn off the engine. Allow the engine and automatic transmission to cool.
2. Draining the fluid: Place a tray under the automatic transmission pan. Carefully unscrew the drain plug using a wrench. Drain the liquid into the pan.
3. Removing the pan: Unscrew the pan bolts around the perimeter using a wrench or ratchet. Be careful as there may be some liquid left in the pan. Remove the pan by hand.
4. Filter replacement: Find and remove the old automatic transmission filter. It is usually secured with bolts or latches. Clean the filter seat with solvent. Install the new filter, securing it with bolts or clips.
5. Installing the pan: Install a new pan gasket onto the pan. Apply sealant to the gasket if necessary according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Reinstall the pan and tighten the bolts. Tighten the drain plug.
6. Filling with fluid: Using a funnel and hose, pour the recommended amount of fluid into the automatic transmission. Check the fluid level using the automatic transmission dipstick with the engine running.
7. Starting the engine and checking: Start the engine and let it idle. Switch the automatic transmission selector to all positions and return to the starting position. Check for fluid leaks.
8. Re-check the fluid level: After some time, drive the car for a short distance to warm up the automatic transmission fluid. Then check the fluid level again using the dipstick. Add liquid if necessary.
Note: It is recommended to change the automatic transmission filter in accordance with the intervals specified in the owner’s manual. A dirty or clogged filter can cause problems with shifting gears and reduce the life of the automatic transmission.
