Steps to change automatic transmission oil:
1. Prepare the car: Turn off the engine and park the car. Raise the front of the vehicle onto support stands to provide access to the underbody.
2. Drain the old oil: Find the drain plug of the automatic transmission oil pan. Place a tray under the plug to collect old oil. Unscrew the drain plug and wait until all the oil drains.
3. Replace the oil pan plug: Clean the oil pan plug and O-ring. Install a new plug with a new O-ring. Tighten the plug to the torque specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
4. Remove the oil pan: Remove the bolts securing the oil pan to the transmission. Carefully remove the oil pan. Be careful as there may be some oil left inside.
5. Replace the automatic transmission oil filter: Locate the automatic transmission oil filter inside the oil pan. Remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. Tighten the new filter to the torque specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
6. Clean the oil pan: Clean the oil pan of any remaining oil, dirt and metal particles. Check the oil pan magnets for metal particles that may indicate transmission problems.
7. Install the oil pan: Apply a thin layer of sealant to the oil pan gasket or use a new gasket. Reinstall the oil pan and tighten the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
8. Add new oil: Use a funnel to pour new automatic transmission oil into the transmission through the dipstick hole. Reinstall the dipstick.
9. Check the oil level: Start the engine and shift the gearshift lever to each position, holding each position for a few seconds. Return the lever to the park position and remove the dipstick to measure the oil level. If the oil level is low, add oil as needed.
10. Reset the service meter: If the vehicle is equipped with a service meter, reset it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Note:
* Regularly changing automatic transmission oil will extend the life of the gearbox.
*Always use the type and grade of oil recommended by the manufacturer.
* Properly dispose of used oil and oil filter.
*If you notice any unusual noises or shifting problems during your oil change, have it diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.
