Friction discs, automatic transmission 6T40

Function:

Friction discs in the 6T40 automatic transmission are used to transmit torque between planetary gears and steel discs. They act as a kind of coupling, allowing torque to be transmitted in only one direction.

Design:

Friction discs consist of two components:

* Steel Base: Thin metal disc that provides rigidity and strength.
* Friction Material: Composite material that provides friction between discs. Friction material is usually made from a mixture of paper, fibers and a binder.

Types:

The 6T40 automatic transmission uses three types of friction discs:

*Simple Friction Discs: Single-sided discs with friction material on only one side.
*Multi-plate friction packs: Consists of alternating plain friction discs and steel discs that form a multi-layer pack.
* Driving friction discs: Have an internal hub that connects to the planetary gear.

Accommodation:

The different types of friction discs are located in the 6T40 automatic transmission as follows:

*Multi-disc friction packs are used in clutch and brake packs.
*Simple friction discs are used in the freewheel and countershaft.
* Driving friction discs are used in planetary gear.

Malfunctions:

Failures in the friction discs can lead to shifting problems, slippage, or complete transmission failure. Common faults include:

* Friction material wear
* Friction material contamination
* Deformation or breakage of the steel base
* Rupture of the drive friction disc bushing

Service:

Friction discs usually last a long time, but they need to be inspected regularly and replaced if necessary. Replacing friction discs is a complex procedure and should be done by a qualified mechanic.
