Automatic transmission selector position sensor for Ford Taurus

The transmission selector lever position sensor (PRNDL) is responsible for detecting the position of the transmission selector lever and transmitting this information to the electronic transmission control module (TCM).

Location:

The PRNDL sensor is usually located on the transmission housing or on the gear selector.

Function:

When the automatic transmission selector is moved to a certain position (P, R, N, D or L), the PRNDL sensor activates the corresponding switch. The switches then send electrical signals to the TCM, which uses this information to control the operation of the transmission.

Troubleshooting:

If the automatic transmission selector position sensor is faulty, the following problems may occur:

*Unable to change gears: The transmission may be stuck in one gear or not shift at all.
*Hard shifting: Gears may shift harshly or with a delay.
*Check Engine Light Illuminates: The Check Engine Light may come on on your instrument panel, indicating a problem with the PRNDL sensor.
* Incorrect selector position indicator: The selector position indicator on the instrument panel may indicate an incorrect position.

Causes of malfunctions:

* Damage to electrical wiring
*Switch failure
* Worn or damaged sensor

Replacement:

If the PRNDL sensor is faulty, it must be replaced. Replacing the sensor is a relatively simple process, but may require a special tool. It is recommended that you have the sensor replaced by a qualified mechanic.
