Adjusting the transmission cable on a Ford Focus with automatic transmission
Tools and materials:
* Set of keys or socket heads
* Screwdriver
* 2-3 drops of cable lubricant
Steps:
1. Safety first:
* Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface, the parking brake is engaged and the gear shift lever is in the “P” (park) position.
2. Find the gear shift cable:
* Open the hood and locate the shift cable connecting the shift lever to the transmission. It usually has a black plastic case.
3. Loosen the lock nut:
* Using a wrench, loosen the lock nut that holds the cable in place. The nut is usually located at the top of the cable attachment to the shift lever.
4. Tension adjustment:
* Use a screwdriver to turn the adjusting screw. Turn the screw clockwise to increase cable tension and counterclockwise to decrease tension.
* Ideally, the tension should be such that when changing gears the lever does not have excessive play and is tightly locked in the selected position.
5. Tighten the lock nut:
*After adjusting the tension, tighten the lock nut, but do not overtighten it.
6. Check:
* Start the engine and shift into all gear positions (P, R, N, D). Make sure there are no unusual noises or problems when shifting gears.
7. Cable lubrication (optional):
* Apply 2-3 drops of cable lube to the cable where it connects to the shift lever. This will help prevent wear and ensure smooth gear shifting.
Note:
*If you are unsure of the correct adjustment, it is best to consult a qualified mechanic.
*If adjusted incorrectly, gearbox wear and shifting problems may occur.
