Ford Focus 3 gearbox adaptation

Transmission adaptation involves resetting and relearning the transmission’s electronic control unit (ECU) to ensure optimal performance. This may be necessary after replacing the gearbox, rebuilding the automatic transmission, or changing engine parameters.

Adaptation procedure:

Materials:

* Diagnostic scanner (eg ELM327 or FORScan)
*Laptop or smartphone

Steps:

1. Warm up the engine and transmission: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes, then shift through all transmission modes (P, R, N, D, S, L) to bleed the transmission fluid.
2. Connect the scanner to the OBD2 connector: Connect the diagnostic scanner to the OBD2 connector under the steering column.
3. Identify the TCM: In most cases, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is called ‘PCM’ or ‘TCM’. Select it from the list of available modules.
4. Launch a special function: In the scanner menu, find the ‘Special Functions’ or ‘Adaptations’ section. Select the ‘Gearbox adaptation’ or ‘Gearbox reset’ function.
5. Start the adaptation process: Follow the instructions on the scanner screen. This usually involves moving the transmission selector between certain modes in a specific sequence.
6. Wait for the adaptation to complete: A progress bar will be displayed for the adaptation process. Verify that all steps completed successfully.
7. Reset the ECU: After completing the adaptation, it is recommended to reset the ECU. Unplug the battery for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

Errors during adaptation:

* If the adaptation process does not complete successfully, there may be a problem with the transmission or other vehicle components.
* If the transmission selector does not shift to the correct mode, check the mechanical connection between the selector and transmission.

Notes:

*The adaptation procedure may vary depending on the specific year and model of Ford Focus 3. Always consult your service manual for exact instructions.
* It is recommended to carry out gearbox adaptation after any repair work related to the gearbox.
* Regular adaptation can improve gear shifting and extend transmission life.
