Visual inspection:
* Manual transmission (MT): The gear shift lever contains a gear shift diagram indicating the neutral position. The clutch pedal is located to the left of the brake pedal.
* Automatic transmission (automatic transmission): The gear shift lever has driving mode designations (P, R, N, D, sometimes S/L). No clutch pedal.
While driving:
* Manual transmission: The driver must manually change gears by pressing the clutch pedal.
* Automatic transmission: The driver selects the driving mode, and the car automatically changes gears.
Under the hood:
* Manual transmission: The clutch and gear lever are visible under the hood.
* Automatic transmission: Usually has a large dipstick to check the torque converter fluid level.
Other signs:
* Manual transmission: Requires more driver involvement and may be more difficult to operate for beginners.
* Automatic transmission: More convenient to use, provides smooth gear changes, but may be less economical.
