Engine cooling system with automatic transmission

In vehicles with an automatic transmission (AT), the cooling system plays an important role in maintaining optimal temperatures for both the engine and transmission.

Cooling system components

* Radiator: A heat exchanger that dissipates heat from the coolant.
*Water Pump: Circulates coolant through the system.
* Thermostat: Regulates the flow of coolant, opening when the engine reaches operating temperature.
* Expansion tank: A reservoir for coolant that expands when heated.
* Radiator Fan: Helps dissipate heat from the radiator.
*Transmission Fluid Cooler: An additional heat exchanger that removes heat from the transmission fluid.

Integration with automatic transmission

The automatic transmission has its own cooling circuit, which is integrated with the engine cooling system. The transmission fluid cooler is usually located in or close to the radiator.

As engine coolant passes through the radiator, it is cooled and circulated back to the engine. At the same time, the coolant also passes through the transmission fluid cooler, where it removes heat from the ATF (automatic transmission fluid).

Temperature control

The automatic transmission engine cooling system is controlled by a thermostat and the transmission control module (TCM). The thermostat regulates engine temperature, and the TCM monitors transmission fluid temperature.

If the engine or transmission fluid temperature exceeds set values, the radiator fan is turned on to increase air flow through the radiator and transmission fluid cooler.

Advantages

Integrating the engine cooling system and automatic transmission provides several advantages:

* Efficient Cooling: Provides optimal cooling for both engine and transmission, preventing overheating.
* Extended Life: Maintaining constant temperature extends the life of engine and transmission components.
* Increased Performance: A cooled engine and transmission operate more efficiently and provide better performance.
* Fuel Savings: A cooled engine runs more efficiently, resulting in fuel savings.

Maintenance

To keep the automatic transmission engine cooling system in good condition, it is important to carry out regular maintenance, which includes:

* Coolant replacement
* Flushing the radiator and transmission fluid cooler
* Replacement of thermostat and water pump
* Checking the radiator fan and temperature sensors
