Car trailer wiring

Materials and components

* 12V wire (typically 12 AWG or 14 AWG)
* LED lights (brake lights, turn signals, side lights)
* Trailer-to-vehicle connector (7-pin or 4-pin)
* Fuse 10-15 A
* Relay box (optional)

Wiring diagram

The following diagram is a typical wiring diagram for a passenger car trailer:

* Brown: earth
*White: Left turn signal/brake light
*Yellow: Right turn signal/brake light
*Green: side lights on the right
*Red: brake lights
* Blue: parking lights on the left
* Black: reserved (not used)

Installation

1. Route the wire: Route the wire from the front of the vehicle to the rear of the trailer. Secure the wire along the trailer frame using plastic ties.
2. Install LED Lights: Install LED lights on the trailer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Connect the wire to the lights: Connect the wire to the lights following the wiring diagram. Use a soldering iron or clamp connections for a secure connection.
4. Install the trailer-to-vehicle connector: Install the trailer-to-vehicle connector to the trailer frame. Pull the wires through the connector and connect them to the appropriate pins.
5. Install the fuse: Install the fuse into the fuse holder in the power cable coming from the vehicle.
6. Install a relay box (optional): If your trailer has brakes or other power-hungry features, you may need a relay box to control power to them.

Examination

1. Connect the trailer to the vehicle.
2. Turn on the headlights and check the side lights, brake lights and turn signals.
3. Go for a short test drive to check the operation of all electrical components.

Safety Tips

*Use the correct gauge wire. The thin wire may overheat and cause a fire.
* Securely insulate all connections.
* Avoid laying wires near moving parts.
* Check wiring regularly for damage and corrosion.
* Replace burned out light bulbs as soon as possible.
