Tools and materials:

* Wires
* Socket
* Plug
* Terminals
* Electrical tape
* Wire strippers
* Terminal crimping tool
* Multimeter (optional)
* Fire extinguisher (optional)

Connection steps:

1. Preparation of trailer and vehicle:

* Park the vehicle and trailer level and secure.
* Turn off the ignition and apply the parking brake on both vehicles.

2. Wire identification:

*Locate the trailer’s wiring harness, usually located in the rear.
*The third party wiring harness on the vehicle is usually located in the trunk or under the rear bumper.
* Identify the wire colors on both sides:
*Green: Left turn signal
*Yellow: Right turn signal
* Red: brake lights/side lights
*White (or grey): ground

3. Wire connection:

* Connect the wires with the corresponding colors on the trailer and car.
* Use terminals to connect wires securely.
* Insulate exposed wires with electrical tape.

4. Connection to the vehicle’s electrical system:

*Connect the trailer wiring harness to the corresponding connector on the vehicle.
*There is often a special trailer connector or you will need an adapter.

5. Connection check:

* Turn on the ignition on the car.
* Apply the brakes and turn on the vehicle’s turn signals.
* Check if the corresponding lights on the trailer are working.

6. Securing the wires:

* Carefully position the wires along the trailer frame.
* Secure the wires using cable ties or wire clamps.

7. Lighting testing:

* Have someone apply the brakes and turn on the turn signals while you inspect the trailer.
* Make sure all lights are working properly.

8. Troubleshooting:

*If you have trouble connecting your lights, use a multimeter to check for voltage.
* Make sure the terminals are crimped correctly and that there is no damage to the wires.

Precautions:

*Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing trailer electrical systems.
* Do not overload the vehicle’s electrical system.
* Keep a fire extinguisher on hand to put out any electrical fires.
* Check the condition of wiring and connections regularly.
*If you encounter any electrical problems, contact an electrician immediately.
