Required tools and materials:
* Phillips screwdriver
* Flat head screwdriver
* Hex key (size depends on model)
* Contact cleaner (optional)
* Penetrating lubricant (optional)
Disassembly steps:
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. To do this, locate the black terminal on the negative terminal of the battery and disconnect it using a wrench.
2. Remove the automatic transmission handle cover.
– For older models with a leather cover, use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry and remove the cover.
– For newer models with a plastic casing: There are usually notches or latches on the front or back of the casing. Press them down and remove the cover.
3. Unscrew the mounting bolts.
– For floor lever models: Remove two or three mounting bolts from the bottom of the shift lever.
– For models with a steering column-mounted shift lever: remove the plastic cover at the base of the lever and unscrew the single mounting bolt.
4. Remove the gear shift knob.
– For floor lever models: Gently pull the handle up until the base comes out of the sleeve.
– For models with a steering column shift lever: Pull the handle forward and up to remove it.
5. Disconnect the wire connectors. Some models have wires connected to the gear shift knob. Disconnect them by gently pressing the latches.
6. Remove the spring. Some models have a spring around the base of the shift knob. If there is one, remove it.
7. Clean and lubricate parts.
– Clean the electrical connector contacts with contact cleaner.
– Apply penetrating lubricant to any moving parts such as the bushing or shift lever.
8. Gear shift knob assembly. Reverse the steps to reassemble the shift knob. Make sure all parts are installed and tightened correctly.
