Toyota Corolla automatic transmission differential function
The differential in the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission performs the following functions:
* Torque distribution between the drive wheels. This is necessary for turning and driving on uneven surfaces when the wheels move at different speeds.
* Shock absorption. The differential prevents the drive wheels from locking when hitting obstacles.
* Prevent slippage. The differential allows one wheel to spin faster than the other, providing traction on slippery surfaces.
The design and principle of operation of the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission differential
The Toyota Corolla automatic transmission differential is planetary, that is, it has a central axis called an epicyclic gear and three satellites that rotate around it. The planet gears also mesh with a fixed outer gear called the sun gear.
The torque from the transmission is transmitted to the sun gear. The pinions rotate around the epicyclic gear and transfer torque to the differential output shafts, which are connected to the drive wheels.
When the drive wheels are moving at the same speed, the pinions remain stationary relative to the epicyclic gear, and torque is distributed evenly between the drive wheels.
When the drive wheels move at different speeds, the pinions rotate relative to the epicyclic gear, transferring more torque to the wheel that rotates more slowly. This allows the car to turn without slipping.
Types of differentials for Toyota Corolla automatic transmissions
Toyota Corolla can be equipped with various types of automatic transmission differentials:
*Open Differential: The most common type, which allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds.
* Limited Slip Differential (LSD): Provides limited slip between wheels for improved traction on slippery surfaces.
* Electronically controlled differential: allows you to electronically control the distribution of torque between the drive wheels.
