Diagnostics of Nissan Sunny automatic transmission
Note: Before performing diagnostics, make sure that the fluid level in the transmission is correct.
Checking fault codes
1. Locate the diagnostic connector (DLC) under the instrument panel.
2. Insert the DTC scanner into the DLC connector.
3. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
4. The scanner should display any stored trouble codes.
Visual inspection
1. Inspect the transmission for fluid leaks, cracks or damage.
2. Check the condition of the drive shafts for wear or damage.
3. Inspect the cooling pipes and make sure there are no leaks or deformations.
Test on the go
1. Start the engine and shift the gear selector to position “D”.
2. Drive the car at different speeds and engine speeds.
3. Pay attention to the smoothness of gear shifting, slippage and noise.
Slip tests
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Press the accelerator pedal and shift the gear selector to the “D” or “R” position.
3. Release the accelerator pedal and observe the engine speed.
4. If the engine speed does not increase, this may indicate slippage.
Load tests
1. Find a flat section of road with a slight slope.
2. Put the car on the parking brake and turn on mode “D”.
3. Release the parking brake and allow the vehicle to start moving.
4. Increase speed and observe the transmission.
5. If the vehicle is unable to negotiate a slope or is slipping, this may indicate problems with the transmission.
Fluid check
1. Place the vehicle on a level surface with the parking brake applied.
2. Start the engine and shift the gear selector through all positions.
3. Stop the engine and remove the dipstick to measure the fluid level.
4. The fluid level should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” marks on the dipstick.
5. Check the fluid for particles, burning odor, or discoloration.
If any problems are found, it is highly recommended that you contact a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
