Nissan Pathfinder automatic transmission housing gasket

Tools and materials:

* Ratchet wrench
*Sockets: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
* Hex keys: 5mm, 6mm
* New oil pan (including gasket)
* New automatic transmission crankcase gasket
* New pan plug with O-ring
* Automatic transmission oil (for filling after replacement)

Replacement procedure:

1. Drain the oil from the automatic transmission. Unscrew the drain plug of the automatic transmission pan and drain the oil into a container.
2. Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery using a 10mm wrench.
3. Remove the engine protection (if equipped). It is usually secured with several 10mm or 12mm bolts.
4. Disconnect the gear shift lever. Loosen the 6mm hex bolt at the rear of the shift lever and remove the lever.
5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the automatic transmission. Usually there are several of them, and they are secured with clamps. Disconnect them carefully without damaging the wires.
6. Unscrew the oil pan mounting bolts. Use a 14mm socket to remove the bolts around the oil pan. Do not remove them completely, but loosen them enough to remove the pan.
7. Carefully remove the oil pan. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the tray and carefully remove it. The gasket should remain attached to the engine.
8. Remove the old automatic transmission housing gasket. Insert a sharp blade or an old screwdriver into the gap between the gasket and the automatic transmission housing flange and carefully remove the gasket.
9. Install a new automatic transmission housing gasket. Apply a small amount of gasket sealant to the new gasket and install it onto the transmission case flange. Make sure it fits snugly.
10. Install the oil pan. Apply a thin layer of gasket sealant to the new oil pan and install it in place. Tighten the mounting bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 14mm socket.
11. Connect the gear shift lever. Reinstall the gearshift lever and tighten the hex bolt to 6mm.
12. Connect the electrical connectors to the automatic transmission. Reconnect the connectors and secure them with the clamps.
13. Install engine protection (if equipped). Reinstall the engine protection and secure with bolts.
14. Connect the battery. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
15. Fill the automatic transmission with oil. Unscrew the top plug on the automatic transmission pan and fill in the oil using a funnel. Fill with oil until it begins to flow out of the inspection hole. Screw the control plug back.
16. Check the oil level. Check the automatic transmission oil level following the instructions in the owner’s manual.

Notes:

*Use only original or manufacturer approved gaskets and sealants.
* Clean all surfaces before installing new gaskets or sealant.
* Tighten the mounting bolts to the torque specified in the service manual.
* Drive the car for several kilometers and check the system for leaks.
