Preparing to remove the automatic transmission
* Park the car on a level surface.
* Make sure the engine is off and the transmission is in park.
* Install wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Drain the transmission fluid.
Removing the automatic transmission
1. Remove weight from the engine. Unscrew the nut on the bracket connecting the ground wire to the engine block. Remove the wire from the bracket.
2. Disconnect the battery cables from the starter. Unscrew the nuts on the terminals and disconnect the cables.
3. Disconnect the gear selector cable. Locate the transmission control lever on the transmission. Disconnect the cable from the control lever.
4. Disconnect sensors and hoses. Disconnect all electrical connectors and hoses connected to the transmission.
5. Unscrew the transmission pan bolts. Locate the bolts connecting the transmission pan to the housing. Unscrew the bolts and remove the pan.
6. Remove the starter. Remove the bolts securing the starter to the transmission housing. Remove the starter.
7. Remove the torque converter mounting bolts. Locate the bolts connecting the torque converter to the crankshaft. Remove the bolts.
8. Remove the torque converter. Remove the torque converter from the transmission.
9. Remove the transmission mounting bolts. Remove all bolts connecting the transmission to the engine.
10. Separate the transmission from the engine. Hold the transmission and carefully separate it from the engine.

* Be careful not to damage any components when removing the transmission.
* When installing a new transmission, be sure to align it with the engine bolt holes.
* Torque all bolts to recommended specifications.
* Fill the transmission with new fluid.
