Location:
* Right side of the transmission, next to the speedometer drive shaft
Description:
The transmission output speed sensor is an electronic component that measures the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft. It converts mechanical movement into an electrical signal that is sent to the transmission control module (TCM).
Function:
* Provides the TCM with output shaft speed information.
*TCM uses this information to:
* Gear shift control
* Transmission fluid pressure adjustments
* Troubleshooting
Consequences of the malfunction:
A faulty automatic transmission output speed sensor can lead to the following problems:
*Hard or incorrect gear shifting
* Increased fuel consumption
*Transmission slipping or vibration
*Transmission fault indicator lights up
Examination:
To check the automatic transmission output speed sensor, you must:
1. Connect the OBD-II scanner to the diagnostic connector.
2. Read trouble codes (DTCs).
3. If there are fault codes associated with the automatic transmission output speed sensor, check its operation.
4. Review the wiring diagram to locate the sensor signal wire.
5. Connect a voltmeter to the signal wire.
6. Start the engine and let it idle.
7. The voltmeter should show a voltage signal that changes as the engine speed changes.
8. If the signal voltage is not within specifications, the sensor may be faulty.
Replacement:
To replace the automatic transmission output speed sensor, you must:
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Locate the sensor.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.
4. Unscrew the sensor and replace it with a new one.
5. Connect the electrical connector to the new sensor.
6. Tighten the sensor to the specified torque.
7. Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
