Adjusting the brake band of a BTR-74 with an automatic gearbox (automatic transmission)

Required tools and materials:

* Socket wrench 17 mm
* Phillips screwdriver
* Mandrel with a diameter of 6 mm
* Bronze grease
* Alcohol solvent
* Rags

Work order:

1. Raise and secure the armored personnel carrier. Install it on jacks or a special platform.
2. Clean the hatch cover for adjusting the brake band from dirt and debris.
3. Remove the hatch cover. To do this, unscrew the two mounting bolts with a 17 mm wrench.
4. Clean the inside surface of the hatch with alcohol solvent and a rag.
5. Insert a 6 mm diameter mandrel into the hole on the brake cylinder piston. This will lock the piston in position.
6. Loosen the locknut on the adjusting bolt with a screwdriver.
7. Rotate the adjusting bolt so that the gap between the brake band and the drum is 0.5-1 mm. Check the gap with a feeler gauge.
8. Tighten the locknut to secure the adjustment.
9. Remove the mandrel from the brake cylinder piston.
10. Check the brake band movement. It should fully compress and release when the brake control lever is moved.
11. Lubricate the friction surface of the brake band with bronze grease.
12. Install the hatch cover and tighten the fastening bolts.
13. Lower the APC.

Note:

* Brake band adjustment must be carried out after replacing or adjusting the gearbox.
* During operation of the armored personnel carrier, it may be necessary to re-adjust the brake band as it wears out.
