BMW E39 transmission filter

Location:

*Located in the transmission pan, which is located under the vehicle.

Function:

* Removes contaminants such as metal particles, clutch and dust from transmission fluid.

Replacement interval:

* The manufacturer recommends replacing the filter every 60,000 – 80,000 km or after 3-4 years, whichever comes first.

Signs that replacement is needed:

* Dirty or darkened transmission fluid
* Slipping or slow gear shifting
*Hum or vibration when shifting
* Delay when switching on gear

Materials required for replacement:

* New transmission filter
* Transmission fluid
* Transmission pan (if necessary)
* Transmission pan gasket
* Keys and screwdrivers
* Container for draining liquid

Replacement procedure:

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift or place it on a level surface.
2. Drain the transmission fluid by unscrewing the drain plug on the transmission pan.
3. Remove the transmission pan by unscrewing the bolts that secure it.
4. Remove the old transmission filter and clean the pan.
5. Install a new transmission filter and a new gasket.
6. Attach the transmission pan and tighten the bolts to the appropriate torque.
7. Fill with fresh transmission fluid through the filler plug on the transmission.
8. Check the fluid level and add to the required level.
9. Clean up any spilled liquid.
10. Reset transmission adaptations (if possible).

Notes:

* When replacing the filter, it is recommended to also change the transmission fluid.
*If the transmission pan is damaged or leaking, it should also be replaced.
*Connecting a scanner to the vehicle can help reset adaptations and ensure the transmission operates according to the new filter.
* Dispose of used fluid and filter in accordance with local environmental regulations.
