BMW automatic transmission selector position sensors

BMW cars use different automatic transmission selector position sensors, depending on the model and year of manufacture.

Sensor types

* Automatic transmission selector position sensor with limit switches:
*Used in older BMW models.
* Contains several electrical limit switches that are activated when the automatic transmission selector is moved to different positions.
* Automatic transmission selector position sensor with potentiometer:
*Used in newer BMW models.
* Contains a potentiometer that converts the position of the automatic transmission selector into an electrical signal.
* Automatic transmission selector position sensor with Hall sensor:
*Used in some BMW models.
* Contains a Hall sensor, which detects the magnetic field created by a magnet connected to the automatic transmission selector.

Sensor locations

The location of the automatic transmission selector position sensors may vary depending on the BMW model. Usually they are located:

*Under the center console
* On the automatic transmission side
* On the automatic transmission selector

Functions

Automatic transmission selector position sensors transmit information about the position of the automatic transmission selector to the automatic transmission electronic control unit (ECU). This information is used for:

* Definitions of the selected gear
* Starter blocking control (does not allow starting the engine if the automatic transmission selector is not in the ‘parking’ position)
* Turn on/off the reversing lighting
* Control of other functions related to the position of the automatic transmission selector

Problems with sensors

Faulty automatic transmission selector position sensors can lead to the following problems:

* Inability to change gears
* Inability to start the engine
* Incorrect display of the selected gear on the dashboard
* Malfunctions in the automatic transmission control system

It is important to promptly diagnose and repair faults in automatic transmission selector position sensors to ensure uninterrupted operation of the vehicle.
