The gear selector in a car with an automatic transmission (automatic transmission) usually looks like a lever that resembles a knob. It has the following design:

* Main handle: Typically made of plastic or leather, it is used to physically change gears.
* Gear Shift Diagram: Illustrated on the handle or on the panel next to it, it shows the location of the various gears.
*Lock Button: Some shifters have a lock button that must be pressed to move the lever from Park (P) to another position.
* Park position (P): The highest position in which the vehicle’s wheels are locked.
* Neutral (N): Position in which no gear is engaged and the vehicle can roll freely.
* Drive (D): The most commonly used position, the transmission automatically shifts between gears based on speed and load.
* Reverse (R): The lowest position used for reverse travel.
*Other Positions: Automatic transmissions may have additional positions, such as Sport (S), Winter Mode (W) or Manual Shift (+/-), that change how the transmission behaves.
