Basic gear designations of an automatic transmission:
* P (Park): Parking gear, locks the gearbox.
* R (Reverse): Reverse gear.
* N (Neutral): Neutral transmission when the engine and transmission are not connected.
* D (Drive): Main gear that automatically changes gears depending on speed and load.
Additional designations:
* 1 (Low): The first gear is designed for driving at low speeds, such as in traffic jams or on steep hills.
* 2: Second gear, designed for driving at medium speeds.
*3: Third gear, designed for high speed highway driving.
* S (Sport): Sport shift mode optimized for fast acceleration.
* L (Low): Low gear mode designed for driving on steep slopes or when towing.
* M (Manual): Manual mode which allows the driver to manually change gears.
* + (Plus) / – (Minus): Plus and minus signs in manual mode that allow you to upshift or downshift.
* D3 (Drive 3): Limits gear changes to three.
* D4 (Drive 4): Limits gear changes to four.
* OD (Overdrive): Enables overdrive transmission, which improves fuel economy when driving at high speeds.
* PWR (Power): High power mode that improves engine responsiveness.
* ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission): Electronically controlled transmission.
* CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): A continuously variable transmission without physical gears.
