Materials required to change automatic transmission oil on a 2008 Subaru Forester:
* Automatic transmission oil Subaru ATF HP (4 liters)
* New automatic transmission oil filter
* Automatic transmission pan gasket
* Key for automatic transmission drain plug (19 mm)
* Wrench for automatic transmission pan bolt (10 mm)
* Working funnel
* Rags or rags
Procedure for changing automatic transmission oil:
1. Safety First: Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Find the automatic transmission pan: Raise the front of the car with a jack and install stands for safety. Locate the transmission pan under the engine.
3. Drain the old oil: Place a container under the drain plug to drain. Loosen the drain plug and drain the old oil.
4. Remove the automatic transmission pan: Unscrew the bolts of the automatic transmission pan and carefully remove the pan. Be careful as there may be some oil left in the pan.
5. Remove the old automatic transmission filter: Disconnect the old automatic transmission filter from the pan.
6. Install a new automatic transmission filter: Insert the new automatic transmission filter into the pan. Make sure it is installed correctly.
7. Inspect and clean the tray and magnets: Clean the tray and magnets of any accumulated sediment.
8. Install a new automatic transmission pan gasket: Apply a thin layer of sealant to the new automatic transmission pan gasket and install it in place.
9. Install the automatic transmission pan: Screw the automatic transmission pan into place using bolts. Torque the bolts to specifications.
10. Fill with new oil: Using a service funnel, pour 4 liters of new ATF HP oil into the automatic transmission.
11. Check the oil level: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Move the gear selector to all positions and return it to the park position. Turn off the engine.
12. Check the oil level: Remove the automatic transmission oil level dipstick and wipe it. Reinsert the dipstick and remove it again. Check the oil level. It should be between the “cold” and “hot” marks on the dipstick.
13. Add oil as necessary: If the oil level is below the cold mark, add a little more oil and check the level again.
14. Reset the automatic transmission oil aging counter (optional): It is recommended to reset the automatic transmission oil aging counter after changing the oil. This can be done using an OBD-II scanner.

* Use only Subaru ATF HP automatic transmission oil.
*Do not mix new oil with old oil.
* Change automatic transmission oil every 45,000 — 60,000 km or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
