Automatic transmission speed sensors Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai Sonata usually has two automatic transmission speed sensors:

1. Input Shaft Speed Sensor (ISS)

*Located on the front of the transmission where the input shaft enters.
* Monitors the speed of the automatic transmission input shaft.

2. Outgoing Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS)

*Located on the rear of the transmission where the output shaft exits.
* Monitors the speed of the automatic transmission output shaft.

Functions of automatic transmission speed sensors:

* Providing information about vehicle speed and automatic transmission gear ratio to the transmission control module (TCM).
*Assists the TCM in determining the appropriate gear and controlling gear shifting.
* Participation in monitoring cruise control and ABS systems.

Sensor locations:

*ISS: Typically located on the driver or transmission side.
* OSS: Typically located on the passenger side.

Automatic transmission speed sensor fault code:

If the speed sensor is faulty, a fault code may be displayed, such as:

* P0715 – Input shaft speed sensor
* P0716 – Output shaft speed sensor

Symptoms of a faulty automatic transmission speed sensor:

* Erroneous gear shifting
*Transmission slipping or excessive heating
*Malfunction indicator light (MIL)
*Poor fuel economy
* Speedometer or tachometer not working

Replacing the automatic transmission speed sensor:

Replacing an automatic transmission speed sensor usually requires:

* Drain transmission fluid
* Disconnect electrical connectors
*Remove sensor
* Install a new sensor
* Fill transmission fluid
