Automatic transmission shift cable clamp
The automatic transmission shift cable retainer is a mechanical device used to prevent the transmission shift lever from accidentally moving out of the Park position.
Operating principle
The lock works in conjunction with the shift cable and the ignition interlock system. When the shift lever is in Park, the detent locks the cable, preventing it from moving. This prevents the transmission from being engaged while the vehicle is not at rest.
Design
The automatic transmission shift cable clamp usually consists of the following components:
*Latch: A spring-loaded mechanism that grips the shift cable and holds it in place.
* Release lever: Located next to the gear shift lever. When moved to the unlock position, it depresses the latch, releasing the shift cable.
* Ignition Interlock: A mechanical device associated with the ignition system. It prevents the engine from starting unless the gear lever is in the Park position.
Operation
To use the automatic transmission shift cable clamp, you must:
1. Make sure that the car is at rest and the gear shift lever is in the “Parking” position.
2. Press the release lever to release the shift cable.
3. Move the gear shift lever to the desired position.
4. Release the release lever. The lock will re-lock the shift cable, preventing accidental movement of the lever.
Maintenance
To ensure proper operation of the automatic transmission shift cable clamp, regular maintenance should be performed:
* Check the cable: Periodically check the shift cable for wear or damage. Replace the cable if it does not work properly.
*Checking the Retainer: Sometimes the retainer may become stuck or worn out. If you are having difficulty moving the shift lever, the retainer may need to be replaced.
*Lubrication: Regularly lubricate the shift detent and cable to ensure smooth movement and prevent wear.
