Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission selector position sensor

Location:

*Under the shift lever, in the transmission control module (TCM)
*Under the center console, near the gearshift unit

Target:

* Determines the position of the automatic transmission selector and transmits information to the automatic transmission ECU
* Informs the on-board computer about the selected gear

Working principle:

* The sensor is a potentiometer or Hall sensor.
* When changing gears, a mechanical link moves a potentiometer slider or a Hall effect sensor is activated, changing the electrical signal.
* This signal is sent to the TCM or automatic transmission ECU, which determines the selected gear.

Symptoms of malfunction:

* Problems with gear shifting
* Check engine light comes on
* Discrepancy between the displayed transmission and the actual transmission
* Inability to exit the car from parking mode

Possible causes of the malfunction:

Replacement:

* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Remove the center console or panel that provides access to the shift position sensor.
* Disconnect the wiring connector from the sensor.
* Unscrew the mounting screws and remove the sensor.
* Install the new sensor and secure it with screws.
* Connect the wiring connector to the sensor.
* Reassemble the center console or panel.
* Connect the negative terminal of the battery.

Examination:

*Connect the OBD2 scanner to the car.
*Check for fault codes related to the shift position sensor.
* Press the brake pedal and change all gears in sequence.
