Automatic transmission selector device

The gear selector in an automatic transmission (AT) is the main control element that allows the driver to select the operating mode of the transmission.

Main components of the automatic transmission gear selector:

* Shift Lever: A manual lever that the driver moves to select the automatic transmission mode.
* Selector control unit: An electronic unit that processes signals from the gear shift lever and transmits them to the automatic transmission control unit.
* Cable mechanism: The mechanical connection that transmits movement from the gear shift lever to the selector control unit.
* Shift Lever Position Sensor: A device that detects the position of the gear lever and transmits this information to the automatic transmission control unit.

Working principle:

When the driver moves the gearshift lever, a cable mechanism transmits the movement to the selector control unit. The selector control unit processes the signal and transmits the corresponding command to the automatic transmission control unit. The automatic transmission control unit then controls gear shifting in accordance with the selected mode.

Automatic transmission operating modes:

* P (park): Locks the automatic transmission output shaft and engages the mechanical locking pin.
* R (Reverse): Engages reverse gear.
* N (neutral): Disconnects the automatic transmission output shaft from the engine.
* D (Drive): Engages forward gear selection.
* S (Sport): Provides sportier shifting with higher engine speeds.
*L (Low): Used for low speed driving or towing.

Additional functions of the automatic transmission gear selector:

* Parking Lock Release Button: Allows you to unlock the shift lever even when the brake pedal is not pressed.
* Mode Shift Button: Allows the driver to manually change gears in some automatic transmissions.
* Shift Lever Position Indicator: Displays the current position of the shift lever on the instrument panel.
