Actions to take when an automatic transmission overheats:
1. Stop the car.
Pull over to the side of the road immediately and stop the engine.
2. Switch the automatic transmission selector to “P” (parking) mode.
This will stop the transfer of power from the engine to the transmission.
3. Raise the hood.
Look under the hood and check the transmission fluid level and color.
4. Check the transmission fluid level.
Use the dipstick to check the fluid level. If the fluid level is low, add the correct fluid recommended for your automatic transmission.
5. Check the color of the transmission fluid.
If the fluid is brown or black with a burnt odor, it may indicate serious internal problems.
6. Start the engine and let it idle.
If the transmission fluid still overheats and emits a burning smell, turn off the engine immediately.
7. Call a tow truck.
If you cannot eliminate the overheating yourself, call a tow truck to deliver the car to a car service center.
Possible causes of automatic transmission overheating:
*Low transmission fluid level
* Worn or contaminated automatic transmission oil
* Clogged automatic transmission oil filter
* Malfunctions of the automatic transmission cooling system
* Problems with electronic control of automatic transmission
* Mechanical problems inside the automatic transmission
Do not attempt to continue driving with an overheated automatic transmission. This can cause serious damage to the transmission and costly repairs.
