Operating an automatic transmission with a trailer
When you pull a trailer with a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission (AT), you need to take some extra precautions to protect the transmission.
Selecting the correct automatic transmission mode
* Tow/Haul Mode: If your vehicle is equipped with this mode, be sure to use it when towing. It optimizes shift points and transmission line pressures for improved strength and durability.
*Manual Mode: If there is no tow mode, you can use manual mode to keep the gears lower, preventing the transmission from overheating.
Transmission Temperature Management
* Warm up the transmission: Before driving the trailer, allow the transmission to warm up by driving at low speed for several minutes.
* Monitor Temperature: Use the transmission temperature gauge or digital display to monitor your transmission temperature. If the temperature exceeds the recommended range, stop and allow it to cool.
*Take breaks: During long trips, take regular breaks to allow the transmission to cool.
Overload protection
*Do not overload: Make sure you do not exceed the maximum towing weight stated in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
*Distribute Weight Evenly: Distribute the load evenly across the trailer to avoid weight shifting and stress on the drivetrain.
*Use a tow stabilizer: A tow stabilizer helps control trailer sway and reduces stress on the drivetrain.
Automatic transmission maintenance
* Regular fluid changes: Change your automatic transmission fluid more often, especially if you tow frequently.
* Inspection and Adjustment: Check shift cables and sensors regularly and adjust as necessary to ensure smooth shifting.
Driving tips
* Accelerate slowly: Avoid sudden acceleration, which can cause the transmission to overheat.
* Brake smoothly: Brake smoothly, avoiding sudden stops that could strain the transmission.
* Avoid steep grades: If possible, avoid steep grades when towing as this can overload the transmission.
