Automatic transmission oil pressure control valve
The oil pressure regulating valve (PRV) is an important component of the automatic transmission (AT). It is responsible for maintaining the constant oil pressure in the transmission necessary for the proper operation of its components.
Functions of the oil pressure control valve
* Adjusts the oil pressure in the automatic transmission in accordance with the load and operating conditions.
* Ensures sufficient oil supply to all automatic transmission components, including the torque converter, clutches and solenoids.
* Prevents excessively high or low oil pressure, which can damage automatic transmission components.
Design and location
The oil pressure control valve usually consists of:
* Springs.
* Piston or ball.
* Oil passage channel.
The valve is located in the automatic transmission valve body and is connected to the oil pump and other components of the hydraulic system.
Operating principle
The oil pressure control valve operates as follows:
* When the oil pressure in the automatic transmission reaches a predetermined value, the spring begins to act on the piston or ball, closing the oil passage channel.
* This limits the oil flow into the system, preventing pressure from rising above the set limit.
* When oil pressure drops, the spring weakens, allowing the piston or ball to open the oil passage.
* This increases the oil supply, raising the system pressure to the set value.
Oil pressure control valve malfunctions
A faulty oil pressure control valve can lead to the following automatic transmission problems:
* Insufficient or excessive oil pressure.
* Transmission slipping, slipping or not shifting gears.
* Automatic transmission overheating.
* Oil leaks.
Replacing the oil pressure control valve
If the oil pressure control valve is suspected of being faulty, it must be replaced by a qualified automatic transmission mechanic. Replacement includes the following steps:
* Draining oil from automatic transmission.
* Removing the valve body.
* Replacement of faulty valve.
* Installing the hydraulic unit in place.
* Filling the automatic transmission with oil.
