Changing automatic transmission oil on a Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel
Materials:
* Mopar ATF+4 transmission oil (about 8 liters)
*Transmission filter (part number 68083260AA)
* Pan gasket (part number 68050558AA)
* Transmission Pan Sealant (Part No. 04318041AA)
Tools:
* 10mm wrench
* 13mm wrench
* 19mm wrench
* Torque wrench
* 3/8″ socket wrench
* 1/2″ socket wrench
* Oil pan
* Funnel
Procedure:
1. Preparation:
* Start the car at idle speed and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Place the vehicle on a lift or a level surface.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Draining the oil:
*Locate the drain plug on the transmission pan (located in the lower right corner).
* Place an oil pan under the drain plug.
* Loosen the drain plug with a 19mm wrench and drain the oil into the pan.
* Allow the oil to drain completely.
3. Replacing the filter and gasket:
* Unscrew the transmission pan bolts with a 10 mm wrench.
* Carefully remove the tray. Be prepared for some remaining oil.
* Remove the old filter and clean the seat.
* Apply sealant to the new gasket and install it on the pan.
* Install a new filter.
4. Pallet installation:
* Lift the tray and level it.
* Install the pan bolts and tighten them with a torque wrench to 9 Nm.
5. Filling oil:
* Locate the filler plug on the transmission (located on the left side of the engine).
* Unscrew the fill plug with a 3/8 inch socket wrench.
* Insert a funnel into the filler hole.
* Fill with new Mopar ATF+4 transmission oil (about 5 liters).
* Start the engine and shift the transmission to all positions.
* Check the oil level with the transmission dipstick. Add oil as needed.
6. End:
* Tighten the filler plug with a torque wrench to 30 Nm.
* Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Lower the vehicle from a lift or level surface.
* Reset the transmission oil change counter (see owner’s manual).
Note: It is recommended to change the transmission oil and filter every 60,000-80,000 km or earlier depending on operating conditions. Check the gearbox oil level regularly and top up if necessary.
